Raining indoors at Hack Day London

Raining indoors at Hack Day London

Lightning hit, electrics died, fire alarms were alarmed and the roof opened up. Of course, when there's lightning there's rain. and when the roof opens up it starts to rain inside. and the hundreds of laptops almost become doorstops.. ack! To their credit, the organisers handled the situation and we were back to normal soon..

Sys-Con Steals Content, then Defames and Libels the Author.

Ulitzer proudly proclaims that they have more than 6,000 authors. Who are these authors? Well, in the case in point, the 'author' is Aral Balkan, well known open-source developer in Flash and Cloud App Development circles. The thing is, he has never written for Ulitzer, aka Sys-Con. When he called them on it, they then libeled him on their site.

Upcoming: joshrussell's Events

Apr 20, 2009: £5 App Meet at The Skiff

A meet-up for programmers, web developers and designers to discuss and showcase their "£5 apps" - lightweight software created by one or two people who take a simple idea and run with it.

The discussion will range from technical (what tools/languages were used during development) to business (building communities, spreading the word, costs and rewards).

We'll be holding the demoing and judging for the 5K App competition (http://fivepoundapp.com/wiki/5kapp/ ), as well as dishing out a *prize* of 5120p (£51.20) for the best entry.

The idea behind the competition is to see what you can create with 5Kb of "code and resources". The summary of the rules being:

* The entire executable app (+ resources) must be 5120 bytes in size or less
* Use whatever language you want
* Net access is allowed, but you can't download more code
* No third party libraries/frameworks (except those installed by default)
* Apps will be judged on fun and/or usefulness

Full rules are available on the wiki page (http://fivepoundapp.com/wiki/5kapp/ ) or else ask a question on the google group (http://groups.google.com/group/fivepoundapp ) if you want clarification on anything.

At the last meet (http://fivepoundapp.com/meetup/15/ ) we demoed several apps:

* 5KTwit http://www.psychicorigami.com/2008/12/22/a-5k-twitter-client/ (Twitter client in Java)
* 5KTODO http://www.psychicorigami.com/2008/12/24/a-5k-javascript-local-storage-backed-todo-list-app/ (Javascript with local storage of TODO items)
* 5KEdit http://www.psychicorigami.com/2009/01/05/a-5k-python-fullscreen-text-editor/ (Python Writeroom style text editor)
* 5KTuner http://www.psychicorigami.com/2009/01/17/a-5k-java-guitar-tuner/ (Guitar Tuner)
* 5KMorse http://www.psychicorigami.com/2009/03/01/5k-morse-code-app-using-capslock-led/ (Morse code using capslock LED)
* Brighton Job Doom http://twitter.com/BrightonJobDoom Job board summarising Twitter bot

So please get coding and start seeing what you can achieve with just 5Kb!

Apr 24, 2009: Brighton flickr April meet at Bali Brasserie

Apr 17, 2009: Show & Tuttle at The Skiff

20 people surrounding one mac and a projector, showing each other things on the internet.

( read the notes from the last meet http://icanhaz.com/tuttlePadMar09 )

no prep
no schedule
no agenda
no context
make it fun, educational, awesome, entertaining, inspiring, etc..

let's see where the conversation takes us.

you can:

take notes
record/stream anything/everything
interrupt
just show youtube videos
hack/code/design
show us what you've been working on
share things you've discovered
talk about your friends work
experiment with things live with the group

please bring your non-geek friends too! this is a cultural exchange :)

no singing. unless it's funny.

no pressure to be there at 5pm, come along whenever you can make it, then we'll probably go to the fountain head pub afterwards.

Apr 17, 2009: Tuttle Club - Coworking at The Sanctuary

weekly coworking session, cafe style.

a time and a place for getting some work done, and to meet people. bring your laptop and some change for coffee :)

Sep 23, 2009: Picnic '09 at Westergasfabriek

This will be the fourth Picnic at the same location in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. So far, I personally thought the event in 2007 was the best, with the 2008 event being more commercial than the grass-roots feeling of previous years....more marketing people than before.
The magic word that Picnic needs to think about in 2009 is focus, perhaps cutting the number of parallel events which distract from the main conference. Videos of the 2007/8 festivals are now up on the Picnic website if you want to get a feel for it. The only clouds on the horizon are their constant drive for growth and the fact that very little is free anymore. Money is going to be extremely tight this year, so I personally hope it doesn't try to become a film festival, but keeps its focus on emerging media. I also hope they put more effort into improving the navigation of the Picnic website. It becomes very chaotic around the time of the conferences. Agree?

May 1, 2010: Expo 2010 - World Fair at Shanghai

Expo 2010 will be held in Shanghai, China and is a scheduled World's Fair in the grand tradition of international fairs and expositions. The theme of the exposition will be "Better City – Better Life" and signifies Shanghai's new status in the 21st century as a major economic and cultural center. It is expected to generate the largest number of visitors in the history of the world's fairs in terms of gross numbers, although it will have a tough time matching the per capita visit rate of the 1967 Montreal World's Fair, attended by 50 million people at a time when Canada's total population was a mere 20 million.

The event is tentatively scheduled to be held from 1 May 2010 – 31 October 2010.

Apr 24, 2009: Critical Mass Brighton bike ride at The Level

Critical Mass Brighton

Free mass bike ride through the heart of Brighton & Hove

Celebrating cycling and promoting a fun, healthy, sustainable alternative to petrol-dependant transport.

Bring bikes, lights and noise!

The ride meets at the Level on the last Friday of every month at 6pm.

Jul 25, 2009: Low Tide Sunrise Bike Ride at King Alfred Leisure Centre

Note: Although there is a lower tide on 11 February, I've decided not to organise a ride then as it'll be too cold. I also want to take a short break to renew my enthusiasm for the event.

Fun cycle dash over the exposed sand flats during one of the lowest tides of the year. The ride goes along the beach from the King Alfred Centre in Hove to Brighton Marina and beyond (note ride start location and direction – it has varied!), or as far as you and your bike can make it.

The ride will set off 15-30 minutes after meeting, so as to catch the lowest tide and the sunrise.

Following August 2007's Low Tide Naked Critical Mash-Up bike ride, the event is clothing-optional.

Time and tide wait for no-one, so if you can't make it to the start, join us en route.

We often go for a skinny-dip in the sea at the end of the ride.

Bring bikes, waterproofs, warm clothes, towels and lights. Remember to thoroughly wash the salt and sand off your bike afterwards. If you're worried about using your own bike, pick a scrap one up from a skip.

Previous rides have taken place on:

21 September 2005
18 October 2005

2 March 2006
10 September 2006

20 March 2007
31 August 2007
28 September 2007

8 April 2008
3 August 2008
1 September 2008
